The Inaugural Cancer Crush was Saturday, September 22, 2018. It was a pretty excellent day. There were a lot of people, near and far, who were part of Run with Renee. When I learned about the Cancer Crush, I knew I wanted to start a team. I knew I wanted to be part of it. I knew it would mean a lot to me. I was pretty excited leading up to this day. I still am struggling to put all of this into words.
Learning you have cancer changes your life forever. I know that’s cliched, but it’s 100% true. This is a world I never wanted to understand so intimately, but it is something that will always matter to me. I was 31 years old. I am a cancer survivor.
I’m pretty sure this is the best running photo of me ever. More importantly, look at that person. She is strong. She is healthy. She doesn’t look like the weak, tiny person that I was. I am me again. I might not be fast but I am out there, and I am living my life. And that is exactly what my surgeon told me to do after my first set of clean scans last year.
We raised almost $10,000. It was a lofty goal, and I’m not (that) sad we didn’t get to an arbitrary number. I am, overwhelmed and appreciative, of every dollar each and every one of you gave. This money is going straight to cancer research right here in Milwaukee. We were the #5 team as far as funds raised. That’s awesome. I’ve never fundraised for an event before and this was amazing.
Friends, family, and coworkers surrounded me and supported me through every step of this whole ordeal. It was so much fun to have people from all of these groups with me on Saturday.
